Elgar's Cello Concerto in e minor is one of his best known works, though also somewhat a departure from his characteristic style. Composed in 1919, the elegiac concerto reflects Elgar's disillusionment following World War I. Though initially critically panned due to a poor premier performance, this concerto has gradually become one of the most notable pieces in the solo cello repertoire -- particularly after Jacqueline Du Pre's definitive 1965 recording. For Cello and Piano. Novello Edition. The main source for the solo part is a copy made by Elgar for Felix Salmond. The bowings, which were probably added during rehearsals, are ommitted from the part, but have been included in the cello and piano score, so that cellists may choose to use or disregard suggested bowings.
